Dr Faustus Deciding to Leave Walpurgis.

This is the first year after entering the 24 year pact where the spirit of progress brings Dr Faustus to Walpurgis to get his mind off of the guilt that he feels over the mistreatment and imprisonment of the young village maiden that he has seduced, betrayed and left with child.  In Germanic folklore, Walpurgisnacht, also called Hexennacht (Dutchheksennacht), literally "Witches' Night", is believed to be the night of a witches' meeting on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, a range of wooded hills in central Germany between the rivers Weser and Elbe.
